Top 5 Reasons to Be a Workamper

Workamping is doing any kind of part-time or full-time work while living in your RV. It’s that simple – and it covers a huge variety of opportunities and experiences.

Everyone’s reason to dream about, start, and continue Workamping is different. Some do it to travel. Others to save money, meet people, or stay active in retirement. After more than 30 years of helping RVers make the leap, here are the top five reasons to become a Workamper.

Reasons to Be a Workamper

1. Travel and Adventure on Your Terms

Workamping lets you explore the country without breaking the bank. Instead of short vacations, you can live where others vacation – national parks, lakes, historic towns, beaches, and mountain retreats.

Spend a summer near Yellowstone, fall in the Ozarks, or winter in Florida. With a Workamping job, you can stay long enough to truly experience an area – to hike the trails, kayak the lakes, and discover local favorites only the locals know about.

Whether you have a bucket list of dream destinations or simply want to see where the road leads next, Workamping gives you the freedom to travel and stay awhile.

2. Save Money – or Earn It

Cutting down your RVing expenses is one of the biggest perks of Workamping. Most employers provide an RV site with full hookups in trade for some work, saving you hundreds or even thousands per month.

Many also offer hourly pay or stipends, depending on the type of position. From campgrounds and resorts to national parks, amusement parks, or ranches, there’s a wide range of options that can fit your lifestyle and budget.

Every bit helps – whether it’s a paycheck, RV site, utilities, or laundry. And if you don’t need the income, it still stretches your travel budget further so you can stay on the road longer.

3. Meet Amazing People

One of the most rewarding parts of Workamping is the community.

At many locations, you’ll be working and living alongside other Workampers – and sometimes locals or international exchange workers too. You’ll share stories, meals, and adventures that turn coworkers into lifelong friends.

Workamping friendships often carry across seasons and states. And if you end up somewhere that isn’t the perfect fit? No worries – most jobs are seasonal, and soon enough, you’ll be off to your next great experience.

4. Stay Active, Keep Learning, and Have a Purpose

Retirement doesn’t have to mean slowing down. Many Workampers choose this lifestyle as their next chapter after leaving full-time careers. It’s a way to stay busy, have daily purpose, and use your skills in new ways.

You might be:

  • Hosting guests at a campground or park
  • Leading tours or educational programs
  • Repairing or maintaining facilities
  • Helping with office, retail, or event support

And if you’ve never done those things before? No problem. Most employers are happy to train and are just looking for reliable, enthusiastic people who want to help.

As Workamper Debbie once shared in our Workamping Today Facebook group:

“It definitely keeps us healthier than being retired sitting around the house. Volunteering at the park is very rewarding and much appreciated by our Rangers and visitors.”

Workamping lets you keep your mind sharp, body active, and heart engaged – all while making a difference.

5. Try Something New and Have Fun Doing It

Workamping gives you the chance to do things you’ve always wanted to try – or never even imagined before.

  • Love horses? Help feed and care for them at a wild horse sanctuary.
  • Into bird-watching? Lead programs at a national forest visitor center.
  • Enjoy working with kids? Coordinate activities at a family campground.
  • History buff? Volunteer at a museum or historical site and share stories in period costume.
  • Missed out on amusement parks as a kid? Spend your summer working at one!

Most Workamper employers don’t require past experience in these roles – just a good attitude and willingness to learn. You may discover new passions along the way.

Bonus: You’ll Spend More Time in the Places You Love

Instead of rushing through your dream destinations, Workamping lets you live there.

Whether it’s the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes, or the Gulf Coast, most positions run 4–6 months, giving you time to explore everything nearby – national parks, trails, lakes, beaches, breweries, monuments, and more.

You’ll save money, gain local insight, and truly soak in each location.
