The Workamping community is full of people who want to help. RVers are generous with their knowledge, and seasoned Workampers are always ready to share what they’ve learned along the way.

Recently, in our Workamping Today Facebook Group, we asked experienced Workampers: “What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to someone just starting out?” Here are their best tips, organized into themes to help you make the most of your Workamping journey.

Do Your Homework First

Many Workampers stressed the importance of research before accepting a job.

“Do your homework.” – Sue T.

“Do your research!! Read reviews. See what there is to do in the area. Try to see what other Workampers say about the job. Have fun.” – Haunted Trio

“Contract, contract, contract…Also, do your research and make sure of what you’re getting into. Know going in if you can do a straight site-for-time trade or if you need pay along with the site. And research where you’ll be working — find every review you can regarding the campground, the management, and the area.” – Steve F.

Ask the Right Questions

Interviewing is a two-way street. The more you clarify up front, the fewer surprises later.

“Fulfill your commitments! Ask the right questions during the interview. Understand exactly what is expected before you accept. If you just up and leave because ‘it’s not a good fit,’ you’re making it harder for everyone else — and hurting your reputation.” – Kassandra C.

“If you’re a couple, verify the hours worked. Some parks want you to work different areas with separate days and times. It may seem silly to ask, but trust me, ask!” – Mike M.

“Make sure you understand ALL of the duties being required. Ask a lot of questions up front. Pick a direction and go for it!” – Bobby T.

“Ask how many Workampers they tend to have per season. Ask about turnover. Ask if it’s common to be hired for one thing but expected to do everything.” – Shae F.

Plan Your Finances

Money matters, and being prepared can make or break your experience.

“Do it as early in life as you can. Make a plan. Be debt free when you start. Buy used and get the RV inspected before you buy.” – Kelly B.

“Make sure you do financial planning before jumping in. Know how much you’ll need each month to survive, plus an emergency fund. Do the math on job offers. Best of luck!” – Garth M.

“Keep money in the bank and gas in the tank in case things don’t work out.” – Amy P.

Be Flexible and Open-Minded

Every job and employer is different. Flexibility will keep you sane — and happy.

“Don’t believe the fantasy. Remember that it’s called WORKamping. There is WORK involved.” – Steven C.

“Don’t do it for the money, do it for the destination/location.” – Doug L.

“Be flexible, especially when first starting out. Take what you can get and do a great job. Ask for recommendations. Get everything in writing. Never stay where you’ll be unhappy — you won’t do a good job.” – SiSi L.

“Once you decide to Workamp, be flexible and open. We love our bosses, but we know we’re hired workers. After tidying up sites, they may ask us to paint, mow, clean cabins, or bathrooms. Get specifics in advance. We absolutely love Workamping.” – Rex L.

“Always have a plan B, C, and D with the ability to pivot immediately.” – Lisa M.

Remember to Enjoy the Lifestyle

Workamping isn’t just about the job — it’s about the journey.

“Don’t wait till you’re retired…till you have enough money…till your house sells…Just go and figure it out on the road!” – Susan A.

“Make sure you try a maiden voyage first. It’s not the life for everyone.” – Diana F.

“Take time off. Leave the campground when you’re not working!” – Michael C.

“You won’t like all of the jobs, but remember they’re temp jobs. Hang in there. You’ll make Workamper friends and bump into them again at other jobs.” – Debby B.

“Stay out of the drama.” – Carol P.

“Remember your home has wheels. Don’t sweat the small stuff.” – Linda K.

The message from experienced Workampers is clear: do your homework, ask questions, plan your finances, stay flexible, and enjoy the ride. Not every job will be perfect, but each one is a stepping stone toward finding what fits you best.

Workamping can open doors to amazing places, lasting friendships, and unforgettable adventures. Take these tips to heart, and you’ll be better prepared to start your own journey.
