We’ve all heard the saying, “You’re only as young as you feel.” For Barbara Alpher, that couldn’t be more true. She began RVing and Workamping at age 73, proving that adventure has no age limit.
Barbara spent much of her life camping in tents, but when both her mother and son passed away in 2013, she decided to make a bold change. She bought a travel trailer, hit the road, and hasn’t looked back since.

A New Chapter of Adventure
Today, Barbara spends her winters in southwest Arizona, volunteering at a wildlife refuge. She staffs the visitor center, greeting guests and answering questions about the 118,000-acre preserve. In past seasons, she’s worked a variety of jobs – from campground hosting to a stint at Amazon CamperForce.
Her approach to Workamping is simple: choose positions that make travel easier and more enjoyable. She looks for jobs with perks that fit her needs, especially after overcoming a hip replacement and managing the effects of a dropped foot.
Despite the challenges, Barbara maintains a positive spirit. Her outlook on life – replacing “stuff” with experiences – is a guiding principle that inspires others to pursue freedom and fulfillment later in life.
Workamping Solo and Loving It
Traveling alone can be intimidating at any age, but Barbara proves it’s possible – and empowering. She plans her travels around destinations she wants to experience, then searches for Workamping opportunities nearby to support her stays.
For Barbara, the experience matters more than the paycheck. She’s found joy in the people she meets, from fellow Workampers to locals in the communities she temporarily calls home.
When RV issues arise – like tire blowouts – she’s learned to adapt and accept help when needed. Her resilience and willingness to learn keep her rolling down the road.
A Life Rich in Experience
Barbara spends her downtime exploring libraries, reading, and soaking up knowledge wherever she goes. She’s always adding new adventures to her bucket list, proving that curiosity doesn’t fade with age.
She has done more in her 70s than most people do in their entire lives! She’s living proof that you can live your dream at any age.
The Takeaway
Barbara’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to begin your Workamping journey. Whether you’re 35 or 75, the lifestyle offers endless opportunities for connection, adventure, and growth.
